HEREAS the special and general rates now established and Preamble.
levied within the borough of Parramatta have reached the
maximwn limit of two shillings in the pound of the assessment of the
ratable property within the said borough, fixed by the * Municipalities
Act of 1867": And whereas certain portions of certain of the streets
of the said borough require to be watered, and it is expedient that the
Council of the said borough should, so far as concerns such localities,
have power to establish and levy such additional special rate for street
watering purposes as is hereinafter mentioned upon or in respect of the
ratable properties in such localities respectively: Be it therefore
enacted by the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the

Parramatta Street Watering.
advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly
of New South Wales in Parliament assembled, and by the authority
of the same, as follows :—
1. Notwithstanding the provision contained in the one hundred
and sixty-eighth section of the * Municipalities Act of 1867," limiting
the maximum amount of general and special rates to be levied by the
Council of any municipality at the sum of two shillings in the pound
of the assessment of the ratable property in such municipality, it
shall be lawful for the council of the borough of Parramatta at any
time upon receipt of a petition purporting to be signed by a two-thirds
majority of the ratepayers of the ratable properties situate in any
street or portion of any street within the said borough, and attested by
some respectable person to the satisfaction of the said council, praying
that the streetyor portion of street adjacent to the premises occupied by
the petitioners may be watered, to proceed to establish and levy upon
or in respect of the ratable properties in the streets propose od to be
watered a special rate not exceeding twopence in the pound of such
assessment as aforesaid, in addition to such maximum of two shillings
in the pound as aforesaid, limited by the " Municipalities Act of
1867," and to apply and expend the moneys so raised in and about
the watering of the street or-portions of street respectively in respect
of which such petition shall have heen so presented.
2. The provisions of the " Municipalities Act of 1867," and of
the "Municipalities Act Amendment Act of 1892," and of all and
every other Act or Acts hereafter passed or in force relating to the
establishment, levy, and enforcement of municipal rates shall extend
and apply to all special rates which shall be established or levied
under or by virtue of this Act as fully and effectually as if such special
rates had been established or levied under or hy virtue of the said
" Municipalities Act of 1867," and as if that Act had authorised the
establishment and levy of rates in the said localities to the amount of
two shillings and twopence in the pound in place of two shillings in
the pound of such assessment as hefore mentioned.
83. The Act may be cited for all purposes as the " Parramatta
